TYPES OF FOUNDATIONS

TYPES OF FOUNDATIONS TYPES OF FOUNDATIONS In this article we will discuss the common types of foundations in buildings. Broadly speaking, all foundations are divided into two categories: shallow foundations and deep foundations. The words shallow and deep refer to the depth of soil in which the foundation is made. Shallow foundations can be made in depths of as little as 3ft (1m), while deep foundations can be made at depths of 60 - 200ft (20 - 65m). Shallow foundations are used for small, light buildings, while deep ones are for large, heavy buildings. SHALLOW FOUNDATIONS Shallow foundations are also called spread footings or open footings. The 'open' refers to the fact that the foundations are made by first excavating all the earth till the bottom of the footing, and then constructing the footing. During the early stages of work, the entire footing is visible to the eye, and is therefore called an open foundation. The idea is that each footing takes the concentrated ...

AFRICAN TRADITIONAL ARCHITECTURE/STEEL PORTAL FRAMES

Image
AFRICAN TRADITIONAL ARCHITECTURE/STEEL PORTAL FRAMES They can be made in form of solid web sections either of single standard section or compound section and in form of lattice frames. The frame can be of fixed foundations- then we observe some economy in the consumption of steel to make the frame, they are more rigid, can cover longer span but at same time the statical display of forces in the foundation is more complicated. The other solutions are two or three hinged frames with lighter foundations. a) Solid web portal frame; they are made of standard profiles, mostly I-beam. They can span the distance up to 60-80 meters, the depth to span ratio 1/38 – 1/40. The frames are placed at 6-12 meters intervals depending on the purlins. They are easy to make and do not require much maintenance. At longer spans, prestressing used to improve the statical properties of the frame. Special cables or steel rods of high tensile properties are attached to the frame and post-tensioning is intro...

Basement Construction of a Church Building (BEAM ANALYSIS). DESIGN OF BEAM Beam span between support to carry lateral loads which are resisted by bending and shears. However, deflection and local stress are also important. Beam may be cantilevered, simple supported, fixed end or continuous beam. The main uses of beam are support floors, columns, carry roof sheeting, a purlins and side cladding and sheet rails. CLASSIFICATION OF BEAM CROSS SECTION 1) CLASS ONE(1): Plastic Cross-section 2) CLASS TWO(2): Compact cross-section 3) CLASS THREE(3): Semi-compact cross-section 4) CLASS FOUR(4): Slender Cross-Section BEAM LOADS 1) Concentrated Loads from Secondary beams and column. 2) Distributed Loads from self weight and floor slabs. ALSO 1) Dead loads from self weight slabs, finishes etc 2) Imposed loads from people, fittings, snow on the roof, etc 3) Wind loads, mainly on purlins and sheeting rails.
